Apache Trail & Tonto National Monument

Enjoy a day in the Sonoran Desert and gaining a new respect for the ancient Salado People. One of Arizona’s oldest scenic highways, the Apache Trail has been used for thousands of years as a trade route between the Hohokam people of the Phoenix valley and the Salado people of the Salt River Basin. Tonto National Monument is a well preserved cliff dwelling dating back to the 1200’s. A short hike gives us a glimpse into the ancient past, a way of life deeply connected to the earth and the seasons in this Sonoran desert oasis.

The awe inspiring scenery is the product of a violent geological past. The anomaly of these massive boulders, columns and spires created from the ash of four volcanos which erupted some fifteen million years ago, attests to the amazing power of the natural world.

The Superstition Mountains, one of Arizona’s great calderas is located in the Sonoran Desert, home to the mighty Saguaro Cactus. Our trip will take us through several Sonoran ecosystems as we follow the Salt River. We will pass by Tortilla Flats and the Roosevelt Dam dedicated by the President himself on March 18, 1911, which represents the first federally sponsored project of its kind completed by the then new Bureau of Reclamation.
